How to use Digital Cameras on your Atari

Serial interfaces can not be find on current digital photo cameras.
And USB will only be available on the new Coldfire (assuming an existing driver),
but what to do with older Atari's ?

Digital cameras use special replaceable memory cards to store the pictures. So why not reading the memory cards directly instead of using the roundabout way via USB. Unfortunately there are several types of memory cards. Most popular cameras work with CompactFlash, but small cameras also use SmartMedia cards because of its smaller dimensions. And last but not least Sony uses its homemade MemoryStick for their cameras.

Memory Card Overview
Preview Type Description Size
MultiMedia Card MMC MultiMedia Card 32MB/64MB(max.)
SmartMedia SM SmartMedia 32MB/64MB/128MB(max.)
Secure Digital SD Secure Digital 32MB/64MB/128MB(max.)
Memory Stick MS Memory Stick 32MB/64MB/128MB(max.)
CompactFlash CF CompactFlash 8MB - 512MB (1GB) and above
IBM Microdrive CF II IBM Microdrive 340MB/512MB/1GB

If your digital camera support one of the above memory cards, then the next step is to find an appropiate reader for that kind of memory card - and how to connect it to your Atari or Compatible. Two types of interfaces appears to be the solution:

Floppy Disk SCSI

Flash Path Floppy Disk Adapter for SmartMedia cards is an electronic device shaped like a standard 3,5-inch floppy disk. It fits into and works from a 3,5-inch 1.44MB floppy disk drive. Flash Path has a slot in the side that accepts flash media cards. To read data, images, audio files, and the like from your digital appliance, simply remove the flash media card from the appliance and insert it into FlashPath. Then insert FlashPath into your Atari's floppy disk drive and upload the media's content to your Atari. Such a device will cost of about $85 and I found it at d-store.
But Note: I didn't check that combination on any of my Atari or Compatibles!

SCSI PC Card Readers/Writers have been engineered with the needs of the digital photographer as a priority. When used in a typical digital photography application, the use of a PC Card Reader to transfer images from a full "digital film" card is at least 100 times faster than using a serial interface found on some digital cameras and up to 4 times faster than current USB connections. Also, by using a separate reader, the camera is not required to e tethered to the computer during image transfer. In other applications the reader/writer can be used as a very convenient method of transferring large data files from a notebook oder handheld PC to a desktop computer.
